Arsenal given new Frenkie de Jong transfer boost after hint over Man United preference

Arsenal have been given a huge boost in their pursuit of signing Frenkie de Jong this summer with Barcelona reportedly ready to sell the Dutchman. Xavi is looking to rebuild the Catalan giants and could cash in on the talented Dutch midfielder as they look to improve other areas of their team.

That's according to Spanish outlet Fichajes, who have reported that Barca will indeed listen to big offers from the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United. Similarly, Spanish outlet El Chringuito have reported that Barcelona could let the Dutchman leave for £58m this summer.

The club no longer considers him an indispensable member of the squad with a number of clubs showing interest. Barcelona have the likes of Pedri, Gavi and Nico who are seen as the long-term midfield trio for the Catalan giants.

Despite the clear links between Erik ten Hag’s recent Manchester United appointment and the possible chance of a reunion with de Jong after spending time at Ajax together, a move is not said to be too likely to United. The midfielder has already given Mikel Arteta a hint on why he could be willing to join the Gunners over the Old Trafford side, if he does leave Barcelona.

Speaking to Voetbal International back in 2019, he said: "I actually thought Arsenal was pretty beautiful in the past.

"In my mind, I have had the following list for a long time: Ajax-Arsenal-Barcelona, call it the Marc Overmars route. But yes, if you can go directly to Barcelona, then you are also right where you want to be. Faster than you ever dared to dream."

Arsenal are looking for midfielders to go alongside the likes of Thomas Partey and Albert Sambi Lokonga. football.london understands that Roma are expected to make a fresh attempt to sign Granit Xhaka at the end of the season.
