Arsenal forced to stay in Wolfsburg after plane catches fire as engine blows up ahead of take-off

Arsenal Women were forced to stay in Wolfsburg on Sunday night after their plane taking them back to the UK caught fire as it tried to take off.

The pilot aborted the take-off and the Arsenal squad, along with the other passengers, were evacuated.

The Gunners, who earlier on Sunday had drawn 2-2 with Wolfsburg in the first leg of their Women’s Champions League semi-final, stayed overnight in Germany before flying back on Monday afternoon.

Arsenal have confirmed no one was hurt in the incident and have thanked staff at Germany’s Braunschweig Wolfsburg Airport for their assistance.

A statement from Arsenal read: “Our aircraft developed a technical issue prior to take-off in Germany on Sunday evening.

“As a result, we remained in Wolfsburg overnight on Sunday before flying back to England on Monday afternoon. We would like to thank the staff onboard the aircraft and on the ground at the airport for their assistance.”

Jonas Eidevall’s side are next back in action on Monday when they will face Wolfsburg in the second leg of their semi-final.

The club are hoping to sell out Emirates Stadium for the game and, with a week to go, have sold close to 50,000 tickets.

Arsenal are in a strong position going into the match after coming back from 2-0 down to draw the first leg in Germany. They pulled off the comeback despite being hit by injuries that have wiped out the spine of their team.

Star forwards Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema were ruled out for the season in November and December due to knee injuries, and last week it was confirmed club captain Kim Little (hamstring) and England skipper Leah Williamson (knee) will miss the rest of the campaign as well.

The Gunners will hope, however, to have forward Caitlin Foord back for the second leg.
