Arsenal: Fiorentina set to miss out on Lucas Torreira purchase clause but remain in race to sign loanee

Fiorentina have not given up hope they could sign Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira this summer, even if they do not activate their clause to buy him today.

The Italian club took Torreira on loan from Arsenal last summer and as part of that deal an option to make the move permanent for €15million (£12.75m) was included.

That clause needs to be activated by May 31 and, as of Tuesday morning, Fiorentina had still not chosen to do so.

The Serie A side have been balking at the fee, while there have also been issues over Torreira’s wages.

The Uruguay international has impressed at Fiorentina and enjoyed his time at the club, and he is keen to stay there.

Should the clause to buy him permanently expire, Fiorentina are still open to striking a deal with Arsenal and are ready for further talks.

Other clubs, however, could well join the chase, with Napoli one of those who have tracked the 26-year-old.

Torreira has slipped down the pecking order at Arsenal under Mikel Arteta and is expected to leave the club this summer. The midfielder will have one year left on his contract come July and would favour a move to Italy.
