Arsenal fearful of William Saliba's next move with defender holding the cards

William Saliba is in no rush to sign a new deal at Arsenal - leaving the North Londoners in a precarious position.

The French centre-half has been one of the season's big success stories, having spent several years away from the Emirates. Mikel Arteta originally appeared unsure on the defender, who has spent the last two seasons out on loan, but he has quickly established himself at the heart of the back four.

Saliba has 18 months left on his deal and his agent, Djibril Niang, hinted that a new contract was close back in the summer, but any talk of an extension has since gone quiet. The player is aware that he is firmly in the driving seat when it comes to negotiations as he grows in importance.

That is according to The Athletic and serves as a warning for Arsenal, who want to avoid a situation that leaves Saliba with 12 months on his deal come next summer, by which point his stock could've risen even further. Several of Europe's heavyweights are circling and the Gunners could find themselves having to fend off potential suitors.

Saliba's performances in North London have advance his case for more international involvement and he played for Les Blues in the recent internationals. An impressive World Cup in Qatar would further enhance Saliba's hand as he ponders his next move.

Meanwhile, Arsenal's immediate focus is finalising the future of academy graduate Bukayo Saka, whilst they also want to secure Gabriel Martinelli's services for the long term. That means any discussions regarding Saliba's next move could be delayed as they attempt to retain their key men in attack.

Should Saliba sign a new deal at Arsenal? Have your say in the comments!

The 21-year-old, who was crowned Ligue 1 Young Player of the Season after shining on loan at Marseille last term, declared that the Emirates feels like home in a recent interview. "Yes, for sure," he told Sky Sports, when asked if he feels settled. "I'm at home here. I like London, I like the club, I like everything. I feel at home here."

Arteta has had nothing but praise for Saliba since the season begun, with the Frenchman dislodging Benjamin White, who was a regular last term but has been forced to find a new place at right-back. Arsenal's hopes of keeping the youngster may well depend on their fortunes this term.

They've started impressively and are being tipped as outsiders for the Premier League title, and Saturday's North London derby against Tottenham will be a serious test of their credentials. Arsenal's original goal, however, was the top four and a return to the Champions League, which could be essential if they are to tie Saliba down to a new deal.
