Arsenal 'favourites' to sign £33m star who has been compared to Thierry Henry

Arsenal have shown the 'most concrete' interest in PSV forward Cody Gakpo, according to recent reports.

The Gunners are set for a busy summer transfer window, with Mikel Arteta keen to bolster his attacking options. football.london understands that the Spaniard wants to bring in at least one forward, a central midfielder and a backup fullback. Considering Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette are both into the final three months of their contracts at the Emirates Stadium, it appears likely that the north Londoners will look to bring in two attackers.

football.london understands that Manchester City frontman Gabriel Jesus and AS Roma star Tammy Abraham are among the club's shortlisted profiles, with technical director Edu holding talks with Jesus' representatives in recent months. Another name that has been heavily linked with a summer move is PSV starlet Gakpo.

Now, Dutch transfer guru Aad de Mos, via Sport Witness, has reported that both Liverpool and Manchester City are interested in the 22-year-old, but it is Arsenal that are currently leading the race to sign him. The youngster has enjoyed an extremely productive 2021/22 campaign, netting 18 goals and providing a further 15 assists.

According to Eindhovens Dagblad, PSV want around €40 million (£33.31 million) if they are to part ways with the Dutch international this summer. Gakpo has been compared to Gunners icon Thierry Henry by some and in a recent interview, he made it no secret of his admiration for the Frenchman.

“The Premier League is a big league,” he told The Sun earlier this month. “We (the Eredivisie) are not the same kind of league.

“But I think we try to look at the Prem and learn about it. Everybody wants to play one time in the Prem.

“I don’t favour one team but I like Arsenal a lot. I looked up to Henry when I was younger because he was a tall guy who played on the wing.”
