Arsenal: Danny Murphy criticises Aaron Ramsdale for reaction to Bruno Fernandes penalty

Danny Murphy has criticised Aaron Ramsdale for his celebrations in front of Bruno Fernandes after the Manchester United star missed a penalty against Arsenal on Saturday.

Nuno Tavares was adjudged to have handled the ball with the game at 2-1 in the second-half of a 3-1 win at the Emirates, although Fernandes’ tame effort hit the post.

Tavares had opened the scoring before Bukayo Saka hit a successful spot-kick with only Cristiano Ronaldo’s 100th Premier League coming in response.

Arsenal, who moved two points ahead of bitter rivals Tottenham over the course of what could be a pivotal weekend in the Champions League race, have consistently been criticised for their celebrations this season.

Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves claimed watching Mikel Arteta’s players celebrate after a late win at Molineux in February was “like they won the league” while pundit Gabby Agbonlahor said it was like Arsenal had “won the Champions League” following a victory at Aston Villa.

Speaking on talkSPORT, former Liverpool and England midfielder Murphy said: “I always think when you’re getting too emotionally involved you’re detracting from your own performance.

‘When you start getting to the Martin Keown in [Ruud] Van Nistelrooy’s face or Ramsdale jumping out [against United], I think you’re losing the plot a little bit. It’s all a bit for fans.

‘I understand it. If I was his manager I’d be saying, “Don’t do that again”.
