Arsenal could sign Barcelona star Cesc Fabregas thinks can be 'next Iniesta' - on one condition

Barcelona are interested in signing Gabriel Magalhaes and are willing to offer players in exchange as part of a deal, according to reports in Spain.

The 23-year-old centre-half has become an integral part of Mikel Arteta's defence this season as the Gunners have progressed into a side capable of challenging for the top four once again.

According to Sport, Barcelona are in the market for a left-footed central defender and are now exploring the possibility of a move for Gabriel. The report says Xavi is an admirer of the Brazilian and the prospect of signing him has already been discussed amongst Barcelona's hierarchy.

Sport have even suggested that Barcelona would be willing to offer players in exchange as part of a potential deal. Names include Memphis Depay, Riqui Puig and goalkeeper Neto.

With New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turner set to arrive in the summer, you'd expect that a shot stopper won't be on the top of the Gunners' priorities list - even if Bernd Leno leaves as expected. Meanwhile, even though Arsenal want to sign at least two new strikers - particularly as Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are expected to leave - at 28, you'd expect the Gunners to move for someone a little younger than Depay.

Puig, however, makes far more sense. Arsenal need to strengthen their midfield options and at 22, he has the potential to grow into one of the world's best midfielders. In fact, Cesc Fabregas has even previously suggested that he can become as influential as the likes of Andres Iniesta. "Riqui can become like Iniesta, for example, if coaches trust him. I know that comparing him with Andres are big words but such a player could cost a fortune on today's market," he said. "I'm sure Riqui has what it takes to succeed, he just has to have the right attitude and keep improving."

The ideal situation for Arteta would be to keep hold of Gabriel and bring someone like Puig in. But the football transfer market works in mysterious ways. Let's just see how it all develops.
