Arsenal could launch Danilo transfer swoop in January after failing with Douglas Luiz pursuit on deadline day

Arsenal could revisit a deal for Danilo in January, with Palmeiras more open to a possible sale then.

The Gunners tried in vain to bring in a new midfielder before the transfer window closed last night following injuries to Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey.

They failed with three bids for Douglas Luiz, the last of which was worth £25million, as Aston Villa refused to sell despite his contract expiring next summer.

As well as Luiz, Arsenal also lodged an enquiry with Palmeiras earlier this week about a possible deal for fellow Brazilian Danilo, who has an £86m release clause for foreign suitors in his current contract.

The Gunners are long-term admirers of the 21-year-old, who has also been scouted by several other major European clubs.

Arsenal’s approach was immediately knocked back by Palmeiras, though, as they had no intention of selling in the summer window as they seek to retain the Copa Libertadores.

The Brazilian club, however, are more open to a deal in January and as such Arsenal could return with a fresh approach then. It is expected that other sides from Europe may make formal offers during the winter window too.

Luiz could also become an option again for Arsenal in January, particularly if he has still not signed a new deal with Villa. That window will be the final time that Villa can sell the Brazilian for a fee or else he can leave for free in the summer.

Leicester’s Youri Tielemans could also be in the same situation if he has not signed a new contract at the King Power Stadium by then.

Arsenal, who are currently top of the Premier League after winning all five of their opening games this season, are back in action on Sunday when they travel to Manchester United.

Elneny and Partey will miss that game, but it is hoped that Oleksandr Zinchenko could make the squad after suffering a knee strain last week.

The Ukraine international has missed Arsenal’s last two matches and is eager to get back playing.

Arsenal should have captain Martin Odegaard available too. The midfielder received what manager Mikel Arteta described as a “bad kick” during Wednesday’s win over Aston Villa, but he should be able to make the trip to Old Trafford.
