Arsenal could hijack Tottenham's Harry Kane succession plan as Man Utd transfer emerges

Arsenal and Tottenham could lock horns to sign Lautaro Martinez if Harry Kane moves to Manchester United.

The north London rivals battled for the Argentine's signature last summer before the Inter Milan striker put any speculation to bed by penning a new contract until 2026.

But Calcio Mercato claims that Martinez could leave Inter in June with Arsenal set to reignite their interest in the forward. Manchester City are also said to be keen on the 24-year-old.

Spurs could enter the race for Martinez's signature too depending on how Kane's future pans out.

Mauricio Pochettino, who is the leading contender for the permanent job at United, will look to reunite with Kane if he becomes the new head coach, according to The Telegraph.

The reports say that Kane is seen as a potential leader and the prolific goalscorer that United have been missing ever since Robin van Persie left the club.

Kane and Pochettino formed a successful partnership at Tottenham spanning over five years as the north Londoners narrowly missed out on a Champions League crown in 2019.

And sources close to the England captain claim he would be keen to work with the Paris Saint-Germain boss once again, although understands orchestrating a move away from Tottenham would be extremely complicated, following the transfer saga with Manchester City last summer.

Kane expressed his desire to leave Spurs as Pep Guardiola looked to prise him away from his boyhood club.

But shrewd negotiator Daniel Levy refused to sell his star man unless a bid of £150million arrived at the chairman's doorstep.

United are willing to test their resolve again, however, if Pochettino is at the helm.

Spurs do not want to part ways with Kane, but have a succession plan in place in case it does come to fruition.

And Martinez will be central to it after their pursuit of the striker last summer. The arrival of Antonio Conte could boost their chances after the pair's successful spell together at the San Siro.

Martinez worked under Conte during their title-winning season last term and the forward has continued his fine form into the current campaign as Inter look to retain their crown.

They could face stiff competition from Arsenal, however, with the forward an appealing proposition for Mikel Arteta who is on the lookout for a new striker.

Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are both set to leave the Emirates in the summer with their contacts running out, meaning the Gunners will have no recognised no.9s following the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Barcelona last month.
