Arsenal close in on Canadian goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo but continue their search for strikers

Arsenal look to continue to bolster their squad ahead of the WSL season resuming in two weeks - with their eyes set on Canadian goalkeeper Sabrina D'Angelo.

D'Angelo will leave Swedish club Vittsjo after four years, on a free transfer to the Gunners at the end of the month. The 29-year-old has 12 caps for Canada and was part of the 2016 Olympic squad that won bronze in Rio.

It is also understood that Jonas Eidevall is searching for attacking talent in the January transfer window as Vivianne Miedema and Beth Mead suffer from long-term injuries. Both top-flight talents have ruptured their anterior cruciate ligaments which has ended their club season and doubts linger about their chance to return before the Women’s World Cup in the summer.

The problem lies with homegrown rules - the Gunners are a 21-player squad, the Women's Super League cap is 25 but eight of those must qualify as homegrown.

Currently, Arsenal have seven players who are classed as homegrown, meaning Eidevall has room for three more foreign players to bring the number to 24, the 25th player would have to be another homegrown signing.

Eidevall's seven homegrown players are: Lotte Wubben-Moy, Jen Beattie, Leah Williamson, Jordan Nobbs, Beth Mead, Kim Little and Teyah Goldie and should Arsenal lose one without signing another academy player to a pro contract, the squad cap comes down to 23.

To qualify as a home-grown, a player must be at the club for at least three years before turning 21, the other caveat is to sign a pro contract the player needs to be 18 years old.
