Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham impacted by radical FA Cup and League Cup rule change proposals

Premier League clubs have suggested two key changes to the FA and League Cups for the coming seasons, according to a report published in the Times. The proposals of new changes comes as clubs look to reduce the chaos caused by fixture scheduling throughout the season.

One of those relates to the FA Cup, with a suggestion that third and fourth round replays could be scrapped altogether, meaning the tie will be finished on the night. This was implemented during the Covid-19 pandemic, however this season looks set to return to the old format of a replay after the first game ends in a draw for those two rounds.

While that adds yet more fixtures for these sides, there is also the added weight of income trickling further down the ladder for smaller sides that are able to force a second match against higher league opposition. Then there's the addition of the League Cup, currently called the Carabao Cup.

The suggestion surrounding that competition is that teams competing in Europe may either field under-21 sides or not compete in it altogether. This would likely mean a new winner each year, seeing as the winner of the second domestic trophy earns a place in Europe if the spot earned by the FA Cup winner is already in Europe.

The report claims that the proposal would come into from 2024 onwards if agreed, with the aim of finding more room in the footballing calendar amid rescheduling chaos. The idea would greatly impact London clubs Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham, seeing as all three regularly compete in Europe and the latter rounds of both competitions.

Should they not be involved in replays and the League Cup at all, it could be seen as a welcome break to a busy schedule. However, it also reduces the chance of silverware in an age where trophies are still the ultimate demonstration of success.
