Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham could target 'new Darwin Nunez' transfer after World Cup displays

A mid-season World Cup has thrown up a lot of complaints from a number people involved in football, but what it has provided is a chance for Premier League clubs, in particular, to take a closer look at any potential January acquisitions.

While Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs have been able to conduct scouting missions on their respective pre-existing targets including Youri Tielemans, Josko Gvardiol and Weston McKennie as well as many others, it has also been an opportunity to spike up an interest in players they would not have considered before their tournament displays.

Christian Pulisic, Mohammed Kudus and Adrien Rabiot have all seen speculation ramp up surrounding their names regarding a potential Premier League move following their respective performances in Qatar.

James Rodriguez was the breakout star of the 2014 World Cup, while Kylian Mbappe was the player who benefited the most from France's win four years ago and as the knockout stages approach, the 2022 star who could be set for a big-money move in January or the summer, may have been revealed.

Giorgian de Arrascaeta, who plays for Flamengo in Brazilian Serie A, was included in Uruguay's World Cup squad but failed to start their first two group stage games. Uruguay drew their opening clash with South Korea before a possible qualification spot was put further out of reach when they lost to Portugal on Monday.

Their previous two games meant a win against Ghana, with results elsewhere needing to go their way, was necessary to qualify for the knockout stages.

De Arrascaeta made a cameo appearance in the Portugal defeat and was awarded a place in the starting XI and immediately repaid the faith shown in him by Diego Alonso. After Andre Ayew missed from the penalty spot, de Arrascaeta put Uruguay into the lead, reacting quickest to Luis Suarez's parried effort.

Just six minutes later de Arrascaeta finished a wonderful Uruguay move when he volleyed home Suarez's delicate chip from just inside the penalty area. Due to his club status, it is unlikely many considered de Arrascaeta as a possible transfer swoop, but he has contributed to 13 goals in 24 Brazilian Serie A appearances this season.

A number of Premier League clubs will likely have been impressed by de Arrascaeta's quick impact for Uruguay and although he is 28, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs could certainly be tempted to make a move with all of their midfields needing a spark.

De Arrascaeta is national team-mates with Spurs' Rodrigo Bentancur and Liverpool's Darwin Nunez and from seeing how they have thrived in their respective spells in the Premier League, de Arrascaeta could be another Uruguayan star to make an impact in the Premier League.
