Arsenal charged by FA over conduct of players during controversial Newcastle clash

Arsenal have been charged by the FA regarding the conduct of their players during Tuesday's 0-0 draw against Newcastle United.

The Gunners were denied two penalty shouts by referee Andy Madley, including an injury-time incident that saw the ball strike Newcastle substitute Jacob Murphy on the arm in the Magpies' penalty area. A number of Arsenal players confronted Madley in the aftermath of the official's decision and the FA have now announced the charge on Friday in an official statement.

Their statement said: "Arsenal FC has been charged with a breach of FA rule E20.1 following its Premier League match against Newcastle United FC on Tuesday 3 January 2023.

“It’s alleged that Arsenal FC failed to ensure its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion during the 95th minute, and the club has until Tuesday 10 January 2023 to respond.”

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was criticised by some sections of the media for his touchline antics, with the Spaniard furious with the officiating, although it was his player's actions, not his, that the FA took exception with.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the full-time whistle, Arteta said: “[I am] Extremely proud of my players.

"The way we played the game, the way we controlled the game and we missed in the final third. We had so many situations to finish them better and then we had two scandalous penalties.”

He then added: “It is not about which one was stronger, we had two penalties. I am not talking about the referee, I am talking about what I saw and that was two scandalous penalties."
