Arsenal broke club record with late January transfer deal as Mikel Arteta eyes more

Arsenal could be in line for a hectic end to the January transfer window with work still to be done on a number of deals.

The Gunners have spent heavily during the winter window after welcoming Leandro Trossard and Jakub Kiwior to the club for a combined fee of £48m. Mikel Arteta will certainly hope the pair enjoy an excellent impact at the Emirates Stadium with the Gunners firmly embroiled in a battle for the Premier League title.

Arsenal might not be finished quite there though with Brighton star Moises Caicedo among the players that they could make a move for in the closing hours of the window. The North London side have had mixed success on deadline day in the past so they might well approach a deal with caution.

With that being said, take a look at all of the deals that Arsenal have completed on the final day of the January window and how those signings performed after putting pen to paper with the Gunners.

Auston Trusty (Colorado Rapids)

The most recent player to have arrived in North London on the final day of the January transfer window, the American U23 international signed for the Gunners 12 months ago. Arsenal struck a deal with MLS side Colorado Rapids to sign the now 24-year-old.

He immediately rejoined his former club on a loan deal until the end of the season and has enjoyed another temporary loan spell away from the Emirates Stadium this term with a spell at Birmingham City. Trusty has been a key player for the Midlands side although it remains to be seen if his performances will be good enough to see him catch the eye of Arteta.

Who do you think has been Arsenal's best-ever January signing? Share your thoughts in the comments below

Cedric Soares (Southampton)

With his contract with Premier League rivals Southampton set to expire in the summer of 2020, the Gunners secured a loan deal for the Portuguese international until the end of the campaign. He was intended to be a back-up option and despite only playing five matches, was signed on a permanent deal.

Cedric has gone on to represent the Gunners on 59 occasions but could soon see his time at the club brought to an end. He has been strongly linked with a move to Fulham - a deal that could again be rubber-stamped on deadline day.

Denis Suarez (Barcelona)

Another deadline day and another late loan deal, the former Barcelona star was intended to bolster Unai Emery’s midfield ahead of the second-half of the 2018/19 campaign. His spell at the Emirates Stadium was an unmitigated disaster though.

Suarez made just six appearances across what was an injury disrupted few months with Arsenal - those outings accounting for just 95 minutes of action on the pitch. He did not make another appearance for the Gunners after early March and very swiftly returned to the Camp Nou.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Borussia Dortmund)

One very rare success for the Gunners on deadline day, the Gabonese striker became Arsene Wenger ’s final signing of Arsenal manager. It could potentially be argued that he was one of his best of all time.

Signed for a then club record £60m following a prolific spell with Borussia Dortmund, Aubameyang certainly displayed his goalscoring instincts in North London. In 163 appearances for the club, he scored 92 goals and won the FA Cup in the process.

Despite that excellent form, Aubameyang’s spell with Arsenal did not end on the best terms having been stripped of the captaincy before being shuffled out of the back door to Barcelona. The 33-year-old is now back in the Premier League with London rivals Chelsea.

Kim Kallstrom (Spartak Moscow)

One of the most baffling signings in Arsenal history , the Gunners welcomed the Swedish midfielder on a loan deal midway through the 2013/14 season from Russian side Spartak Moscow. Whilst the move itself wasn’t the most head-scratching element of the deal, the fact that he arrived with a serious back injury most certainly was.

Kallstrom made just four appearances for Arsenal during his time with the club only one of which was a start. He did manage to help the Gunners to the 2014 FA Cup final with a seven-minute substitute appearance against Wigan - something that he ranks as his highlight with the Gunners. Sure, Kim, whatever floats your boat.

Nacho Monreal (Malaga)

Signed for what now looks to be a bargain £10m fee, Monreal went on to become a club custodian during the final years of Wenger’s era in North London. The Spanish left-back went on to represent the Gunners on 251 occasions.

Despite not having been part of the most glorious Arsenal squads in history, he still enjoyed a hugely successful spell at the Emirates. He helped the Gunners to three FA Cup titles before being allowed to join Real Sociedad ahead of the 2019/20 season.

Monreal only retired back in the summer of 2021 following two seasons back in Spain.

Thomas Eisfeld (Borussia Dortmund)

A product of the Borussia Dortmund academy, the German midfielder arrived in North London on the final day of the 2012 January transfer window for a nominal fee. Wenger predicted big things having compared him to Invincible Robert Pires but Eisfeld did not live up to that billing.

He made just two senior appearances for the Gunners, scoring a goal in a League Cup victory over West Brom. Eisfield was sold to Fulham in 2014 but spent just a solitary season with the side before a move to VfL Bochum.

He now finds himself with Regionalliga West club Rot-Weiss Essen.

Andriy Arshavin (Zenit)

Having long been linked with a move to Arsenal throughout the 2009 January transfer window, the Gunners certainly took their time striking a deal with Zenit for the forward. With the deadline coming and going, the Russian still wasn’t confirmed as a Gunner with rumours suggesting that he was set to return to his homeland.

24 hours after the window had closed, Arsenal finally announced that they had got a deal over the line. In the end, it appeared that the effort was not really worth it with Arshavin scoring just 23 Premier League goals over four years.

He then returned to his former club on-loan before putting pen to paper on a permanent deal on a free transfer.

Guillaume Warmuz

After Ramy Shaaban was left injured, Arsenal turned to the free agent market to sign more goalkeeping back-up. After a lengthy spell with French side Lens, Warmuz looked to be an excellent candidate.

He was only in North London for a matter of months and left having never made an appearance for Arsenal during his time at the club.
