Arsenal and Tottenham's results which would force unlikely Champions League playoff

The lead position in the race for the final spot in the top four has already changed so many times so far this season and there are almost certainly more twists on the way.

At different stages of the campaign, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and even West Ham have occupied the much-coveted fourth spot but with five games left to play it looks increasingly like it will be a shootout between the two North London sides.

As things stand, just two points separate Arsenal and Spurs, with the Gunners currently boasting the upper hand from fourth while Spurs remain hot on their tails in fifth. The landscape looked drastically different as recently as earlier this month, when seemingly all the momentum was with Antonio Conte's side.

Arsenal had just lost three in quick succession to Crystal Palace, Brighton and Southampton while Spurs were putting the likes of Newcastle and Aston Villa to the sword. However, two inspired performances at Stamford Bridge and at home to Manchester United have propelled Mikel Arteta's men back above their enemies.

Both teams have a testing run of fixtures from this point onwards, with Spurs still having to make the daunting trip to Anfield to face a Liverpool fighting for the title while Arsenal have tricky away games at West Ham and Newcastle United.

The date marked in the calendar of both sets of supports is undeniably Thursday, May 12 when Arsenal travel to the home of their most fierce rivals Spurs in a game many view as a 'winner takes all' tie with Champions League qualification on the line.

However, there is an incredibly slim chance that not even that fixture will settle things.

Premier League rules state that if two sides finish level on points, with matching goal difference and head-to-head records - a play-off game must be contested providing a title, relegation or qualification into Europe is still in the balance. It is likely this fixture would be played at a neutral ground.

Were Arsenal to surrender their slim advantage with five games to go and find themselves level on points with Spurs, their rivals would actually go back above them due to their superior goal difference. Spurs enjoy a goal difference of 18, while Arsenal are six short with 12.

In terms of head-to-head records, Arsenal have the upper hand due to their victory against a Tottenham team in September that was then led by Nuno Espirito Santo. A blistering start to the game proved to be enough for the Gunners as they ran out 3-1 winners, with all three goals bagged inside the opening 34 minutes.

The results that need to occur for a Premier League fourth-placed play off to take place would see Arsenal register back-to-back 3-0 wins over West Ham and Leeds United before losing the huge clash at Spurs 2-1.

The final two Gunners fixtures would have to end with a 1-1 draw away at Newcastle before beating a relegation threatened Everton 2-0 at home on the final day.

From a Spurs perspective, 2-1 wins over Leicester City and Arsenal either side of a 3-0 defeat by Liverpool would mean two 1-0 victories over Burnley and Norwich City respectively would be enough to spark a high-stakes play-off with Arsenal.
