Arsenal and Tottenham 'monitoring' Swansea City star amid contract option

Swansea City's Nathan Wood is attracting interest from Premier League duo Arsenal and Tottenham, according to reports.

The defender has excelled since joining the Swans from Middlesbrough last summer, with Russell Martin stating he wants the 20-year-old to sign a new long-term deal with the club.

Wood's current contract with Swansea expires in the summer of 2024, although the club do hold the option to extend it by 12 months.

However, speaking ahead of his side's clash with Huddersfield Town, Martin stated Wood - who recently made his debut for England's Under-21s - deserved to be rewarded with an improved deal.

"When we have really talented and promising young players, when they play really well you have to reward them otherwise you run the risk of losing them sooner than you should," explained Martin.

"You run the risk of not getting as much money as you should for them if they end up getting sold. Once things become clearer in the next few weeks, Woody is someone we need to have a look at, for sure."

And journalist Fabrizio Romano claims Premier League leaders Arsenal - along with the Gunners' north London rivals Spurs - are both keeping a close eye on Wood ahead of the summer transfer window.

"Nathan Wood, attracting interest after 2002-born CB impressed on England U21 debut and been outstanding for Swansea this season," Romano wrote on Twitter.

"Understand Arsenal and Tottenham are monitoring his performances closely. Swansea looking to try and extend his contract to prevent summer move."

Wood has made 38 appearances in all competitions for Swansea so far this season.
