Arsenal and Sevilla plan Jose Antonio Reyes tribute in Emirates Cup clash

Arsenal and Sevilla will observe a minute's applause in the ninth minute of their Emirates Cup clash on Saturday in memory of the late Jose Antonio Reyes.

Reyes, who played for both clubs during what was a hugely successful career, tragically died in a car accident in June 2019, aged 35.

The Spaniard lifted the Europa League trophy three times with Sevilla, whilst he was also part of the Invincibles side that famously went unbeaten in the Premier League during the 2003/04 season.

Reyes also enjoyed a loan spell at Real Madrid, where he won the La Liga, and spent five seasons at their rivals Atletico, where he won two Europa League titles and a UEFA Super Cup. He also won the Taca de Liga with Benfica in 2009.

Supporters inside the Emirates Stadium on Saturday have been encouraged to applaud the Spaniard in the ninth minute in recognition of his former shirt number. There will also be a video tribute played on the big screens ahead of kick-off, while managers Mikel Arteta and Julen Lopetegui will exchange shirts before the match.

Reyes will be fondly remembered by everyone affiliated with both clubs.
