Arsenal and Newcastle set for fierce transfer battle over 'quality' Premier League ace

Arsenal have already been busy in the transfer window ahead of the 2022-23 campaign with the arrivals of midfielder Fabio Vieira and goalkeeper Matt Turner already confirmed but they are not stopping their.

In attack, Mikel Arteta is poised to add Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus to his frontline with a medical reportedly imminent ahead of an official announcement this week. The 25-year-old's compatriot Raphinha is another name high on the Gunners' list of targets as well, according to multiple reports.

The Leeds United winger has impressed since moving to Elland Road in the summer of 2020 and after keeping Jesse Marsch's side in the Premier League on the final day of last season, a move away now seems likely. Barcelona are said to be his number one choice but with the La Liga giants struggling financially, Arsenal have a real chance and it is a deal former midfielder Jack Wilshere is a fan of.

"He’s [Raphinha] someone who came to England and adapted straight away," he said in an interview with talkSPORT earlier this summer. "That always shows the quality of a player because some players – even top players – take a little while to get to grips with the Premier League. He’s got a lot of experience in a short amount of time and was in a relegation battle last season. He’s one I would like to see at Arsenal."

Leeds are currently demanding £60 million for the winger and Arsenal are set to return with a second approach soon. But the Gunners are set for a fresh challenge in the race with newly rich Newcastle also taking an interest.

Following their takeover by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, the Magpies are on the hunt for big names that will help them climb the table next term. January saw the likes of Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimaraes and Dan Burn arrive and they are showing no signs of slowing down with The Northern Echo reporting their interest in signing Raphinha.

Newcastle have held talks with Leeds over the a deal for the winger but are yet to make a formal approach, choosing to see how things develop in Raphinha's camp for the time being. However, they are completely unwilling to pay the £60 million asking price currently put forward by the Yorkshire side.
