Arsenal and Man United target Lisandro Martinez explains Joshua Kimmich impact on his career

Lisandro Martinez has already revealed that he studies Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich because of the German international's ability to be one of the best in the world in more than one position.

Arsenal are said to have had two bids turned down so far, though, in an attempt to reach a solution, the Athletic have reported that the north London outfit are set for a meeting with the Eredivisie champions this week to work out a deal. It's believed that Ajax want €50million (£43million) for his signature.

One particular reason Arsenal are interested in Martinez is because of his ability to play multiple positions, namely central defence, left-back and defensive midfield.

Mikel Arteta has problems on the left-hand side on the left of the back four, with Kieran Tierney’s battles against injury causing issues in the previous campaign. Add to that the lack of left-sided centre-back options beyond Gabriel and it’s an area that needs addressing.

Although Arsenal plan to play Martinez principally on the defensive flank, having managed the Argentine at Ajax, Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag may think he's a better option centrally, hence why they're also interested in signing him.

Martinez's versatility is clearly what's appealing to both Arteta and Ten Hag and perhaps there's a reason why he's so comfortable playing in so many different areas on the pitch.

One player he's watched particularly closely over the years is Bayern Munich's Kimmich, who started out as a right-back before being moved into midfield with great success under Pep Guardiola.

Speaking to La Nacion back in August 2020, as cited by Sky Sports, he said: "The club always give you information, but you have to do extras yourself for a new position.

"I watch football all the time and I observe all players, in all positions, and look at how they move. I love the details about players."

"When he [Kimmich] plays in midfield, I like the calmness he has and the way he reads the game," said Martinez. "A player has to be intelligent. He has to have confidence, of course, but it's a game of decisions and you make decisions with your head."

Martinez will be a huge coup for either Arsenal or United, but the battle is very much on as things stand.
