Arsenal 2-0 Leicester: Thomas Partey and Alexandre Lacazette fire Gunners back into top four

Arsenal made it five wins from five in the Premier League to keep their top four bid well on track with a 2-0 victory over Leicester at the Emirates.

Thomas Partey and Alexandre Lacazette were on target as the Gunners climbed back into fourth, still with three games in hand on Manchester United, West Ham and Wolves below them.

Mikel Arteta was able to name an unchanged side from the one that started the win at Watford last weekend, with Emile Smith Rowe back from illness to take his place on the bench, while Brendan Rodgers shuffled his pack with four changes following the Europa League victory over Rennes on Thursday night.

The Gunners made a bright start and were rewarded for it after just 11 minutes as the visitors’ set-piece vulnerability was exposed once more, Partey getting across the near-post unmarked to glance home from Martinelli’s corner.

Partey then curled against the intersection of post and bar from range but the Foxes improved and might have gone in level at the break had it not been for a terrific Aaron Ramsdale save to keep out Harvey Barnes’ header.

It was Partey again involved as the Gunners were given chance to double their lead from the spot shortly before the hour-mark. The Ghanaian’s header from close-range was cleared off the line by Luke Thomas, but after a lengthy VAR check referee Anthony Taylor noticed a handball by Calgar Soyuncu in his attempt to block the Arsenal midfielder’s effort first.

Lacazette made light of the long wait to take the penalty, as he fired high beyond Kasper Schmeichel to score his first goal since Boxing Day and keep Arsenal’s fine run going ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Liverpool.
