Two men have been arrested after fleeing a 'stolen' Land Rover before hurling bricks at police officers. Greater Manchester Police spotted a Land Rover Discovery Sport in Tameside last night (February 20) which was believed to have been stolen in Bramhall days before.
Officers from GMP’s specialist Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit first noticed the car as it ran a red light on Shepley Road, in Ashton-under-Lyne, at around 10.45pm. As the suspects fled the scene following a short pursuit, GMP says multiple objects and bricks were launched at the officers involved, causing serious damage to police vehicles.
An image shared by GMP shows an unmarked Volkswagen Golf with a smashed windscreen and damaged wheel arch following the incident. Police, alongside GMP dog handlers, hunted down the two men in their 30s.
The pair were detained and remain in police custody for questioning today (Tuesday). Superintendent John-Paul Ruffle, of GMP's Specialist Operations, said: "Our officers are faced with a number of different situations every single day and work hard to keep the public safe and to crack down on criminal activity.
"In this instance, serious damage was caused to the police vehicles with several objects being launched at the car, thankfully, the officer and no members of the public were seriously injured in this attack. GMP will not tolerate this behaviour and I hope last night’s collaborative actions demonstrate that we will use all resources available to catch the suspects and make sure our streets are safe."
