Arrests after children as young as NINE filmed being assaulted in town centre

Children as young as nine have been targeted by youths and filmed being assaulted in a wave of attacks. Three children, aged from 11 to 13, have been arrested following a series of incidents in Wigan town centre in February and March this year.

Greater Manchester Police says the trio were arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and making threats to kill. They were taken to custody and questioned by specialist officers.

All three have since been bailed with conditions and pending further enquiries. Officers are continuing their investigation into the recent spate of attacks.

Anyone with information is being urged to come forward. Detective Inspector Chris Broad, of GMP’s Wigan CID, said “These arrests come from a series of assaults in Wigan town centre, where young children, the youngest being 9 years old have been targeted and then assaulted whilst being filmed on mobile phones.

“Our enquiries remain ongoing and we are appealing for any information that people may have in relation to these incidents to get in touch with officers. This can be done by ringing Wigan’s Neighbourhood Crime team directly on 0161 856 5308 or 101 quoting CRI/06LL/*7296/23 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
