Detroit authorities have announced a significant development in the case of the fatal shooting of 57-year-old neurosurgeon Devon Hoover, which occurred in April 2023. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy revealed that Desmond Burks, 34, has been arrested and charged with first-degree premeditated murder, felony murder, larceny of over $20,000, using a computer to commit a crime, and felony firearm possession in connection with Hoover's murder.
According to Worthy, the investigation into Hoover's murder was extensive, spanning over a year and involving collaboration with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. The probe extended across five states and three countries, yielding a substantial amount of documents and evidence.
It was disclosed that Burks and Hoover had an intimate relationship, with Burks allegedly charging Hoover for their sexual encounters. Cellphone data indicated Hoover's movements between his Detroit mansion and Burks' residence in the Grandale area on the day before the murder.
The investigation crossed state lines, reaching Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Texas, and California, as well as international borders, including the U.S., England, and France. The discovery of Hoover's blood-stained Range Rover led to the subsequent finding of his body in his home.
Hoover, a respected neurosurgeon with 27 years of experience, was found dead in his attic crawlspace, wrapped in a blood-soaked carpet and shot twice in the head. Following his murder, several personal items were reported missing, and fraudulent transactions were made from his accounts.
Burks' fingerprint was found in Hoover's vehicle, and the doctor's watches were recovered from Burks' residence. Notably, Burks was previously charged in an unrelated incident involving a road rage fatality.
Authorities are optimistic that a person of interest in custody on an unrelated charge may provide valuable information regarding Hoover's murder. The tragic loss of Dr. Devon Hoover, who transitioned from a family farm to a distinguished medical career, has left a void in the community.
