A cordon was put up on the residential street while forensic officers gathered evidence.

No injuries were reported to the emergency services following the gunfire.

Police have now confirmed that a 27 year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, in connection with the shooting.

He is currently in custody where he will be interviewed by detectives.

In a previous released statement, Detective Inspector Catherine Walsh said: "These are the early stages of an investigation, during which we are working to establish exactly what happened tonight, and preserve any evidence.

"If you were in the area, passing by or live locally, you could be able to help. Your CCTV, dashcam, doorbell footage may present us with opportunities to find those responsible for this incident and quickly take them and their weapon off the streets.

"Gun crime in Merseyside has fallen dramatically in the past few years, due in no small part to those people prepared to speak to us about such incidents, directly or anonymously. However you choose to tell us, please come forward and we will take action."
