Arnold wrestler, 25, pursuing her dream to become WWE fighter in memory of her dad

An Arnold woman "never wants to stop" pursuing her dream of becoming a household name in wrestling in memory of her father who died.

Winona Makanji, 25, whose stage name is Kanji, was crowned Defiant Women's Champion and House of Pain wrestling school women's champion after taking up the sport aged 22.

She grew up in love with the sport as a child after watching shows with her family.

Dazzled by the showbiz and bright lights of the ring, she has since taken part in more than 100 fights.

Her dad, Shailesh inspired her to get into wrestling but he sadly died in 2015 of an undetected heart condition at 47 years of age.

"My dad is my inspiration and I want to keep his name alive by making him proud. He got me into wrestling when I was young. He is still there with me and I just never want to stop," said the former Redhill School pupil.

"He always told me I could achieve whatever I wanted so I want to prove him right.

"I fell in love with wrestling because of the storyline that comes with a fight. There is drama and entertainment to it. It's not just two people in a ring, there's all that background to it.

"My ultimate goal is to wrestle in the WWE or in Japan."

Winona has been nominated for Nottingham's 30 Under 30, a partnership between Nottinghamshire Live, Confetti Institute of Creative Technologies and The Prince's Trust, which highlights rising stars who "represent the spirit, drive and energy of a thriving city".

An awards ceremony, sponsored by Nottingham law firm Shakespeare Martineau, is being held on October 7.

When Winona is not busy wrestling in the ring with her signature move the Kamikaze Kanji, she works as a teacher through a supply agency.

She wants to inspire more people into taking up wrestling, especially women, and said the industry has never been more welcoming.

Winona got to meet her hero, wrestling superstar Shawn Michaels, when she was picked to be part of WWE NXT UK tournament at Download Festival.

"It's an amazing time to be involved in the industry. People really appreciate the hard work that is being done to grow it," she added.

"It's always been a male-dominated sport, but there are so many opportunities for women now.

"There are lots of options out there for how you can train, as much or as little as you want."
