Liverpool boss Arne Slot has been left unimpressed by his side’s performance in the 1-0 win over Girona in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.
Mohamed Salah scored his 50th Champions League goal on Tuesday night, as his penalty proved to be the difference in Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Girona, but manager Arne Slot was far from impressed with his side’s performance.
The Reds had to wait until the 63rd minute before taking the lead, with Darwin Nunez missing several chances in the first period, and the returning Alisson was forced into numerous world-class stops.
It wasn’t the type of Liverpool performance that we’ve become accustomed to as of late, with Girona making the Merseyside outfit work for the three points, and Slot was keen to highlight this post-match press conference.
Arne Slot: ‘Far From Pleased’ With Liverpool Performance vs Girona
“If you ask me about all the six games, I’m really pleased with all the results,” Slot said after the game.
“I’m really pleased with the five games, the way we played. I am far from pleased about the performance tonight.”
Pressed on what specifically left him unhappy, the Dutchman responded: “A lot. Especially two things.
“If you play against a team who has such a good idea about football and know how to bring the ball out from the back like some other teams we faced recently, like (Manchester) City or Real Madrid then you have to be so intense if you want to make it difficult for them.
“But if every time you are waiting a few seconds and then if you do press, you are so easily out-played as this team can cause you problems and this is what they showed during the whole Champions League campaign, except for PSV Eindhoven away.
“I almost feel sorry for them because they deserve so much more in this campaign than the three points they have now.
“And every time we lost the ball we were not aggressive enough, almost every time they just went all the way to our goal.
“We had hardly any control in the game, maybe the second half was better – I’m trying to be positive.”
Despite the underwhelming performance from their manager’s perspective, the Reds remain top of the Champions League table with the victory and are almost certain to advance to the last-16.
The UK’s best football betting sites have them as 4/1 favourites to win the competition come the end of the campaign, with Manchester City, Real Madrid, Arsenal and Barcelona following in the outright winner market.
