Armed thief threatens staff and steals cash at Scots newsagents

A thug threatened staff at a Scots newsagents with a weapon and robbed the store of cash.

The incident occurred at the McColl's newsagents on Provost Davidson Drive in Ellon at around 9.50pm on Thursday, February 17.

The thief entered the shop brandishing a weapon and demanded money before leaving with a three-figure sum.

No one was injured during the robbery but the staff members have been left frightened as a result.

It is believed that he headed over the the River Ythan footbridge, towards the Gordon Park area of the Aberdeenshire town.

The suspect has been described as being around 40-years-old, 5ft 7ins tall and of an average build, according to Police Scotland.

He was wearing a dark coat and trousers and black and white trainers, He spoke with a local accent and possibly had ginger facial hair.

Police confirmed that there were no injuries following the incident and extra patrols will be carried out in the area for reassurance.

They are now appealing for anyone with more information to assist their ongoing enquiries to get in touch with them.

Detective Inspector Andrew Wilson said: "This was a frightening experience for the staff involved and thankfully no one was injured.

“Thankfully, incidents like this are extremely rare in the Aberdeenshire area and our officers will be carrying out extra patrols in the area to reassure the public.

"Enquiries are ongoing to identify the person responsible for this crime and we are appealing for anyone with information which may assist our enquiries to please come forward.
