Armed siege on New Year's Eve ends with two arrests

An armed siege in a Cheshire town on New Year's Eve ended peacefully - despite the stand-off lasting "several hours".

Police rushed to a property in Ellesmere Port on the morning of New Year's Eve (December 31) to arrest a suspect in relation to a robbery. However, the man refused to open the door and according to police "made a number of threats".

He eventually came out of the address on Sutton Way after officers engaged with him. The 33-year-old was subsequently arrested on suspicion of robbery and affray, Cheshire Live reports

A second man, aged 32, was also arrested on suspicion of robbery. Both have since been released on conditional bail.

In a statement, Cheshire Constabulary said: "At around 10.20am on Saturday 31 December police attended an address on Sutton Way, Ellesmere Port, to arrest a man wanted in relation to a robbery.

"Upon arrival at the scene, the man refused to open the door and made a number of threats. Officers, supported by the armed policing alliance, engaged with the man for several hours and he came out the address shortly after 1pm.

"The 33-year-old local man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of robbery and affray. A second man, aged 32, was also arrested on suspicion of robbery. Both men have since been released on conditional bail."
