Armed police ‘swoop on gunman’ as two killed in New Zealand on eve of World cup opening ceremony

Armed police were scrambled after reports of a gunman at a construction site in Auckland with two people killed in the incident.

The shooter was roaming around the site in the city centre, according to the New Zealand Herald.

Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown reportedly said the gunman was dead.

Police were patrolling the area and residents urged to remain indoors during the incident on Wednesday evening (UK time).

There were scenes of mayhem as bloodied victims were given emergency first aid at the scene.

Patients were being rushed into ambulances as paramedics battled to save lives.

The St John ambulance initially said six had been injured, three of them seriously.

“I’m from South Africa … we left there not to have this,” one construction worker told the Herald.

The opening cermony for the Women’s World Cup is being held in Eden Park, Auckland, on Thursday.
