Armed police swoop after reports of three man 'machete' brawl

Armed police descended on a street following reports of three men fighting with “machetes”.

Cheshire Constabulary told the ECHO officers were called to a disturbance near a bookies on Frederick Street in Widnes town centre at about 3.50pm on Saturday. Neighbourhood officers, supported by firearms units and a helicopter, swooped on the scene but those involved in the brawl had fled.

A force spokesman said following enquiries officers arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of affray at around 1pm on Monday. Residents reported armed police in the area and the road being shut.

One man told the ECHO “three cop cars with lights going” had arrived on Saturday and "police blocked off the street”.

On social media, a Facebook user said they had seen "armed police are everywhere and the roads have been blocked off".

The force spokesman said: “At around 3.50pm on Saturday, October 22, police were called to reports of a disturbance in Widnes.

“The caller reported three men, possibly armed with machetes, who were fighting near to a bookmakers on Frederick Street.

“Local officers, supported by the police helicopter and armed patrols, were deployed to the scene and on arrival all those involved had fled the scene.

“Following enquiries, a 20-year-old local man has since been arrested in relation to the incident.

“The man was arrested at around 1pm today, October 24, on suspicion of affray.

“He is currently assisting officers with their investigation.

“Enquiries to locate a number of other suspects remain ongoing.
