Man in critical condition after being shot at Hackney Central station

A man is in critical condition after being shot and stabbed at Hackney Central station on Wednesday afternoon.

Armed officers were called to the east London Overground station following reports of a firearms incident at 1.29pm on Wednesday.

Upon arrival they found a 20-year-old man with multiple stab wounds and a single gunshot wound to his leg. He was taken to a local hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

No arrests have been made but officers found a knife, a bullet and a bullet casing at the scene.

Detective Inspector Paul Attwell said: “While I appreciate this incident may come as a shock to the local community, it is important to state that this was an isolated incident.

“We have been conducting extensive enquiries at the station and in the local area and we are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or the events leading up to it – they may have information that could be crucial to our investigation.

“The public will notice an increased presence of officers at the station and in the surrounding area to provide reassurance following the incident.”

Hackney Council on Wednesday asked for commuters to avoid the station.

A statement said: “There has been a Police incident at Hackney Central Station and it is currently closed.”

The station is operating as normal on Thursday.
