Armed police in Bensham: Affray suspect arrested hours after cops called about distressed man

A man was arrested three hours after armed police flooded a Tyneside street.

Officers were sent to Woodbine Place in Bensham, Gateshead at around 8.30am this morning after Northumbria Police received a report that there was a man in a "state of distress" in a property.

At around 11.30am a 39-year-old man was taken into custody.

He is currently being questioned on suspicion of affray.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "At 8.30am today we received a report of a man in a state of distress inside an address on Woodbine Place in Bensham.

“Officers were deployed to the scene and a 39-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of affray and taken into police custody.”

One local resident said they saw around 12 police vehicles and an ambulance at the scene.

Police could be seen standing in a back lane, while one marked car blocked its entrance.
