Armed police halt Metro at Monument in Newcastle after reported sighting of wanted suspect

Police were forced to halt a Metro train at Monument station after a reported sighting of a wanted suspect.

Witnesses saw armed officers descend on the Newcastle city centre station shortly after 4pm on Thursday and a train was held while they carried out their enquiries. Officers say that the suspect was not located at the scene and searches now continue.

The incident caused delays to trains and Nexus confirmed that they had held at train at Monument at the request of police.

A spokesperson tweeted: "There are delays of between 5-10 minutes system wide due to an earlier train being held at Monument at the request of the police. Please leave extra time for your journey where possible. Apologies for any inconvenience caused."

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “At about 4pm today (Thursday) officers attended Monument Metro Station in Newcastle following a reported sighting of a wanted suspect.

“The suspect was not present and enquiries are ongoing to locate him."
