Armed police arrest man moments after surrounding bus in dramatic scenes

Armed police surrounded a bus in Wythenshawe on Wednesday afternoon (September 28) shortly before a man was arrested by officers. The bus, which had been driving along Portway in Wythenshawe, near Woodhouse Park, was brought to a sudden halt at around 5.30pm, according to passengers.

Startled passengers have told of how police officers ordered those on the bottom floor to leave the bus immediately. Pictures from the incident show officers, armed with guns, pointing their weapons at the bus. Shortly after, a man was also seen in handcuffs with armed officers further along Portway.

Further details about the nature of the incident have not yet been confirmed by Greater Manchester Police.

One passenger who was on board the bus told the M.E.N he had heard a police helicopter overhead moments before the incident. He said: "I got a bus from Benchill to Wythenshawe and then changed buses. I heard the helicopter above but didn't think anything of it at first.

"I got on the next bus and as we are going through Woodhouse Park the bus pulled over, which I assumed was to allow the police to pass us. The next thing I knew they had surrounded the bus and jumped out with huge guns, shouting at us all on the ground floor to get off the bus.

"We all stood on and watched, none of us really knew what was happening. All the neighbours came out and were watching, and then after someone was arrested, we were told we could get back on again.

"Just before we were about to leave, an officer came on to check everyone was okay and that nobody was shaken up. In that moment, every scenario runs through your head."

Greater Manchester Police have been approached for further information.
