A man who allegedly assaulted two women in Sydney's eastern suburbs has been shot by police as they attempted to arrest him.
Armed with a knife, the 26-year-old is said to have attacked the women on Bunnerong Rd outside a Woolworths store in Matraville on Wednesday afternoon.
Eastern Beaches police arriving on the scene attempted to arrest the man in the underground car park of the supermarket, where they allege he produced a knife and confronted officers.
They tasered and then fired at him.
He was treated at the scene for a gunshot wound to his leg before being taken to St Vincents Hospital in a stable condition.
The circumstances of the incident will be the subject of a critical incident investigation.
