Armagh can compete with the best insists Kieran McGeeney as Orchard await Rian O'Neill verdict

A last-gasp goal from Matthew Tierney nudged Armagh closer to relegation back in March while Galway ended their Championship aspirations following a penalty shootout win in Croke Park last summer.

Armagh fans will feel their side is due a change of fortune against the Tribesmen and they’ll be hoping it comes this Sunday when the sides lock horns again in Carrick-on-Shannon.

“We’ve played them twice before. It was a drawn game, then extra-time and a draw game,” said Orchard boss Kieran McGeeney.

“In the League game, they scored a goal in the last minute to win. Galway are a brilliant team, (Pádraic) Joyce has done a brilliant job.

“They’ve a great defensive system in place, they play a double sweeper and they are very good on the break. (Damien) Comer and (Shane) Walsh are two special players up front.

“They are a good team, but we’ve the players to play most teams, as we’ve shown all year.

“At the balance or the tipping point, we seem to come up short. The largest we’ve got beaten by all year is two points.

“You get beat by Galway with a last-minute goal - they are All-Ireland contenders and we are useless.

“You get beat by a penalty kick against Derry - one man is a genius and the other man is a gobsh***! It is a thin line, it really is.”

McGeeney will hope to have joint-captain Rian O’Neill cleared to play against Galway after contesting his red card against Tyrone. The Crossmaglen clubman's CHC case is set to take place on Wednesday night.

The Armagh boss believes one win could ignite his charges in what is a wide-open All-Ireland Championship.

“It is hard to take punch after punch. You just need that wee bit or luck or that break to go your way,” added McGeeney.

“Hopefully, in one of these games, they’ll fall in our direction and we’ll get over the line. That gives you a different belief.

“Our own team went through it back in 1999. We’d three or four years when we just couldn’t get over the line. A free-kick goes your direction and you win a game and things click into position.

“We’ve been very competitive. We’ve shown we can live with any of the top teams. At the end of the day, these boys want to win and you want to get over the line.

“Execution has been a major problem for us this year."
