An Arkansas couple, aged 21 and 20, has been arrested for allegedly trying to sell their two-month-old baby to a man at a campground. The couple faces felony charges of endangering the welfare of a minor and attempting to accept compensation for relinquishment of a minor.
The incident came to light when the manager of the Hide Away Campground reported to the Benton County Sheriff's Office that the couple had attempted to exchange their baby for a six-pack of beer and $1,000. Witnesses corroborated the attempted adoption, and the child was found in need of medical attention upon discovery.
Upon investigation, it was revealed that the couple signed a letter granting custody of their child to another individual, with a disclaimer stating that the child could not be returned. The child was later taken to a hospital for evaluation for signs of neglect and is now under the care of the Arkansas Department of Human Services.
Witnesses reported that a resident of the campground had offered to take the baby for the night in exchange for beer, as the couple had approached them seeking alcohol. The intoxicated individual expressed concern for the baby's well-being and took the child out of the couple's care for the night.
The man who was supposed to purchase the baby had drawn up a contract, and although no money had exchanged hands at the time of the arrest, he planned to provide the couple with a $1,000 check. The couple claimed they were surrendering the baby due to difficulties managing the child along with their three dogs.
One of the individuals involved was released on bond, while the other remains in custody. The case has raised serious concerns about child welfare and the risks associated with such reckless actions.
