Arizona Senate Candidate Kari Lake Criticizes Democratic Opponent

Kari Lake announces her bid for Senate at an event in Scottsdale

Arizona GOP Senate candidate Kari Lake has criticized her Democratic opponent Rep. Ruben Gallego, labeling him as 'radical as they come' following a resurfaced interview where he disparaged Trump voters. Lake expressed dismay over Gallego's past comment in 2016, where he referred to Trump voters as 'dumb' and the 'worst people in the world.'

Lake accused Gallego of misrepresenting himself as a moderate while supporting policies she deemed extreme, such as backing sanctuary cities, opposing border security measures, and endorsing defunding the police. She also criticized his stance on allowing biological men to participate in women's sports, arguing it would undermine girls' sports.

Both candidates are vying for independent voters in Maricopa County, the state's largest county, where independents constitute a significant portion of the electorate. Lake expressed optimism about winning over non-Republican voters, including disaffected Democrats who she believes are disillusioned with the current direction of the Democratic Party.

Despite trailing Gallego in polls, Lake remains confident in her chances, citing internal polling that suggests a closer race than indicated. She highlighted the substantial financial backing Gallego has received and characterized the race as tight, with significant investments from national figures like Chuck Schumer.

Lake criticized Gallego's pre-political career, citing his involvement with a bank serving illegal immigrants, a harassment claim from his time at city hall, and his association with an ambulance company under investigation for fraud. She emphasized her commitment to representing all Arizonans, regardless of their political affiliations.

Gallego's campaign did not respond to requests for comment on the matter. Lake believes that the focus on issues like abortion by Democrats in Arizona has not resonated with voters, who are more concerned about economic matters.
