Arizona Governor Repeals 160-Year-Old Abortion Ban

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs recently made headlines by signing legislation that repeals the state's long-standing near-total abortion ban, which has been in place for 160 years. This move paves the way for a new 15-week restriction to be implemented as law.

The bill was passed by the GOP-held Senate, with two Republicans crossing party lines to join all 14 Democrats in supporting the measure. The debate surrounding the bill was intense, with Republicans criticizing the defectors and expressing concerns about a potential fall ballot initiative aimed at enshrining abortion rights in the state constitution.

During the signing ceremony, Governor Hobbs and other Democratic leaders emphasized that the repeal marks just the beginning of a larger battle for reproductive rights. They stressed the importance of protecting women's bodily autonomy, their right to make healthcare decisions, and their ability to control their own lives.

This repeal represents a significant victory for abortion rights advocates who have long sought to overturn the 1864 law that banned abortion at all stages of pregnancy, except in cases where the mother's life was at risk. Providers faced the threat of imprisonment for violating this law.

However, the immediate future of abortion access in Arizona remains uncertain. A recent ruling by the Arizona Supreme Court indicated that the state must adhere to the century-old law, but enforcement was not expected until at least June 27. Additionally, the repeal legislation will not take effect until 90 days after the Arizona Legislature adjourns later this year, potentially leaving the outdated abortion ban in effect for some time.
