Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, a Democrat, is navigating a challenging legislative session with Republicans holding expanded majorities in the statehouse. Despite the political landscape, Governor Hobbs is optimistic about finding common ground through bipartisan cooperation to address critical issues facing the state.

Border Security

Governor Hobbs has emphasized the importance of collaboration with the Trump administration on border security, particularly in combating fentanyl trafficking. While acknowledging concerns about deportation threats, she remains committed to prioritizing the removal of violent criminals from Arizona's streets, irrespective of their immigration status.

Water Scarcity

Hobbs is advocating for stronger regulations to safeguard groundwater sources, a pressing issue given Arizona's prolonged drought conditions. Efforts to update water laws last year were unsuccessful, prompting the governor to take executive action to address unchecked pumping in rural areas. She is hopeful for legislative consensus on revamping groundwater regulations to ensure sustainable water management.

Education

The governor aims to address concerns surrounding Arizona's school voucher program, which allows public funds to be used for private-school tuition. Critics argue that the program strains the state's finances, while supporters view it as a vital component of school choice. Hobbs seeks to rein in the program's expansion and reduce its impact on the state budget.

With the state's revenue projection for the upcoming fiscal year showing an increase of $231 million, Arizona is in a more stable financial position compared to previous years. Governor Hobbs is set to outline her policy priorities to lawmakers at the start of the session, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts to tackle shared challenges facing the state.
