An Arizona father, De'Andre Terrell Johnson, 32, has been charged with attempted murder, two counts of aggravated assault, and one count of unlawful flight after livestreaming his attack on a Department of Child Safety (DCS) worker in Mesa. The incident took place at the Mesa Tower near Alma School Road and Southern Avenue.
Court documents reveal that the attack followed a meeting between Johnson and the DCS employee, during which serious allegations were discussed in an open custody case against him. Johnson livestreamed the meeting and, at its conclusion, unexpectedly put the worker in a chokehold, threatening his life.
Witnesses reported seeing the victim on the ground with visible injuries to his face, indicating a violent struggle. The victim was rendered unconscious and required medical attention at a nearby hospital.
Johnson's aggressive behavior continued as he taunted onlookers and the victim while livestreaming the incident. Despite pleas from bystanders to stop, Johnson persisted in his assault, ensuring the attack was captured on video.
After fleeing the scene, Johnson was apprehended by Mesa Police in Scottsdale following a pursuit. The victim later disclosed that Johnson had previously made threatening remarks about his daughter, indicating a premeditated intent to harm.
The victim's injuries were deemed severe by medical professionals, with the victim narrowly escaping death. Johnson is currently in custody on a $500,000 cash bond.
In response to the incident, a DCS spokesperson expressed shock and emphasized the agency's commitment to ensuring the safety of its staff. The spokesperson highlighted the challenging nature of the work performed by DCS employees and reiterated the department's dedication to protecting its workers.
The DCS is conducting a thorough review of the incident to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The assaulted specialist has been discharged from the hospital and is now recovering at home with family.
