Arizona crash: Two dead and 11 injured after pickup truck ploughs into group of cyclists

Two people have died while 11 more were injured after a pickup truck ploughed into a group of cyclists.

The incident happened in suburban Phoenix, Arizona, US, just before 8am on Saturday morning when the vehicle hit a "large group of adult cyclists", according to police.

A woman was pronounced dead at the scene while a man later died at a hospital.

Eleven other riders were taken to hospital with various injuries, while police said the driver of the pickup truck, who has not been identified, remained at the scene of the crash.

A statement released by Goodyear Police Department on Facebook read: "We are sad to update that this is a fatal crash with two confirmed deceased cyclists. One adult female and one adult male.

"This crash involved a single vehicle (pick-up truck). The adult male driver remained on scene. This investigation is ongoing."

It is unclear what caused the crash as several vehicles from emergency services attended the scene of the incident.

Earlier this month, two NHS nurses were killed at the Grand Canyon after a horror car crash with a bus while visiting the site.

Tatiana Brand, 30, and Raquel Moreira, 28, nurses at Southampton General Hospital, were said to have been killed instantly during their holiday of a lifetime on February 3.

According to local reports, the driver of their vehicle performed a U-turn while on State Route 64 in Arizona when it was struck. The road acts as a gateway to the canyon.

The nurses were sat in the rear. No one on the bus was injured. They had spent years planning their ill-fated road trip across the US and posted pictures of their travels in the days before the collision.

On the east coast, eight people were injured after a U-Haul truck crashed into pedestrians in New York two weeks ago.

Bomb squads were deployed to the scene and footage shows the area swarmed with first responders surrounding a vehicle on the pavement.

The incident happened at around 11am local time on Bay Ridge Parkway and Fifth Avenue in New York's Brooklyn borough.

A police spokesperson revealed a total of eight people were injured, with two left in a critical condition, two serious, and the other four suffering minor injuries.

The driver was arrested at the scene of the incident.

New York councilman Justin Brannan said: "A man driving a U-Haul went on a rampage in Bay Ridge. He was just apprehended in Sunset Park.

"Several people were hit and badly injured. We have no idea of motives at this time but this wasn't an accident."
