Our favourite witches Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have finally spilled the beans on what was really going through their minds during the viral “holding space” interview moment and it’s safe to say they were as confused as the rest of us.
If you somehow have no idea what I’m talking about, you must touch a lot more grass than me. To catch you up, let me give you a rundown on the meme the internet was holding space for.
It all kicked off during an Wicked press tour interview with Ariana and Cynthia with Out Magazine’s Tracy Gilchrist. Tracy casually mentioned how “people are taking the lyrics of “Defying Gravity” and really holding space with that and feeling power in that.”
Unsurprisingly, Cynthia had an emotional reaction to the news (no seriously, they be crying in every interview). Her bestie Ari comforted her by grabbing a single finger and thus the entire interview became my favourite meme of the year, speading like wildfire!
Everyone has been holding space for everything in their lives — from being hungover, to taking sick days, or for watching Challengers for the 80th time, whatever it is, space has been held for it!
A month later the Wicked stars are spilling how they really felt about the interview. Cynthia said to Variety, “I was surprised, because I had no idea. I hadn’t been looking that much.”
Ariana admitted to Variety, “I didn’t know what any part of it meant. I didn’t understand the first sentence, and then I definitely didn’t understand how you responded.” Honestly, same girl.
Now when it came to the finger-holding moment that launched a thousand memes, Ariana explained it was just instinctive.
“She looked like she was going to cry again so I was like, ‘I’m going to grab this,’ because she looks like you might need something.”We love a supportive queen!
Cynthia added her own cheeky take on the chaos: “After a while, I didn’t know how to be there.” I’m dead!

Even Tracy Gilchrist didn’t expect her question to become meme royalty. She shared her thoughts post-meme explosion on OUT: “I never considered I’d become a meme. But as an unrepentant showqueen, I’m thrilled that it’s for something this campy.” Oh, I’m obsessed with this diva.
So I guess we can take a cue from our queens — whenever you have no idea what the fuck is going on, sometimes all you need is to hold space (and maybe a finger). Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to hold some space for my next sweet treat break!
