Are you boycotting the Qatar World Cup?

This year's World Cup in Qatar has proved a hugely controversial issue, with the decision to award the tournament to the Gulf state back in 2010 prompting great backlash ever since.

FIFA has been embroiled in claims of bribery which reached a pinnacle over the decision 12 years ago to give Russia and Qatar the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

Qatar itself has been criticised for numerous issues including poor workers rights and discrimination against LGBTQ+ people, on top of a lack of infrastructure within the country to be able to host such a large event.

Human Rights Watch have labelled the human rights abuses as a 'stain' on FIFA, with Amnesty International calling on the organisation to set up a fund to compensate workers in Qatar and to prevent future abuses. Analysis from the Guardian concluded that an estimated 6,500 workers had died during construction of the stadiums for the World Cup.

Rights for LGBTQ+ people and women have also been heavily criticised, with a 2021 report from Amnesty International pointing out that same sex conduct between men still remained an offence, and that women continue to face discrimination in law and practice.

These factors have caused great concern over the morality of the World Cup, leading to some people choosing to boycott viewing it. To let us know whether or not you'll be doing the same, you can fill in the above poll or via this link if it isn't showing.
