Are pubs open in Ireland on Good Friday? All the rules that have to be followed on holy day

Good Friday is fast approaching and many punters will be looking to spend their extra day off work in the pub with friends and family.

For years, pubs, off licences, and supermarkets were not able to sell alcohol on the holy day, but in 2018 big changes came and now the rules are very different.

Pubs can open and sell alcohol as per normal business on Good Friday, but they have the option to remain shut.

Some business owners will decide to stay closed in line with their beliefs, so customers should check in with their local pub for their opening and closing times.

What happened to the ban?

We had that infamous incident in 2010 which saw uproar over a game in the old Magners League between Leinster and Munster being scheduled for Good Friday.

After a lengthy clash between vintners and the State/Gardai, pubs in Limerick were allowed to serve.

Under the old laws, from 1927 to 2018, pubs and shops were forbidden from selling alcohol.

But that was lifted permanently from 2018 after heavy campaigning.

Why was the ban lifted?

There's no official reason for this, though most people believe it was to increase tourism and tourist income.

Thousands of confused stag parties were left wandering the streets of Temple Bar having travelled over here for Easter.

Of course, we only really got 2018 and 2019 out of the ban-lifting - with Covid shutting the pubs for two years.

So this year will mark the fourth time pubs will have the option to legally sell alcohol on Good Friday.
