He wrote: "On Thursday I suffered a stroke which has caused limitations to the left side of my body . The CT scan showed the damage done to my brain and the fact that I had had a number of mini stokes recently.
"It’s hereditary in my family and explains why my walking and balance has been so bad lately. I am being looked after very well and I’m in the right place . I’m able to and will continue to carry out my Council duties. Thank you."
Fellow UUP member for Ards and North Down asked the public to keep Councillor Brooks in their prayers.
In a statement he said: "I ask that my friend Councillor Mark Brooks be in your thoughts and prayers. I have been worried since I first heard of this. I spoke to Mark on Saturday morning again.
"Mark is a close friend of mine. Hope and pray that he recovers from this. I will be thinking about him and supporting him in any way I can. Thank you."
