Archer ban looms on monster night for AFL tribunal

North Melbourne's attempt to free Jackson Archer from a three-match suspension for rough conduct headlines a huge week for the AFL tribunal, with at least three clubs set to challenge player bans.

Hawthorn defender Jack Scrimshaw will fight a three-match penalty for striking Essendon's Jordan Ridley, and Richmond forward Tom Lynch will contest his one-match ban for rough conduct on Carlton's Tom De Koning.

Sydney, however, have accepted Justin McInerney's three-match suspension for rough conduct over the incident that left Brisbane Lions defender Brandon Starcevich concussed.

Melbourne are yet to decide whether they will accept or challenge Aidan Johnson's one-match suspension for rough conduct on Giants forward Callum Brown.

Archer, son of former Kangaroos hard-man Glenn, was cited over the collision that knocked out Western Bulldogs defender Luke Cleary on Saturday night.

The incident, which featured accidental contact from Archer's knee to Cleary's head, has caused much debate.

Former Bulldogs captain Bob Murphy and ex-St Kilda skipper Nick Riewoldt are among the past greats who have voiced their opinion Archer should not be banned over the accidental contact.

Riewoldt went further, saying he would be "really fearful for the game itself" if Archer was suspended.

"You can't legislate accidents out of the game," the Saints' 336-game champion Riewoldt said on Triple M.

"We don't want concussions, that point has been made, that's why players that are now bracing and protecting themselves are getting suspended.

"Jackson Archer is lucky not to have a broken leg. It's a violent collision."

The match review officer graded Archer's actions as careless conduct, severe impact and high contact, resulting in a three-match suspension.

Cleary is in concussion protocols and will miss at least one match, but the Bulldogs have indicated the defender is recovering well from the collision.

Richmond will almost certainly argue Lynch was not at fault over his collision with De Koning last Thursday night because he was pushed into the contact by Blues defender Jacob Weitering.

The incident was graded careless conduct, medium impact and high contact.

Hawthorn will have to prove Scrimshaw was trying to contest the ball when his swinging left arm caught Ridley high last Friday night.

Ridley initially continued playing but was later substituted out of the game with concussion.

The incident was graded careless conduct, severe impact and high contact.

Scrimshaw was later concussed in a head clash with teammate Josh Battle and will miss at least one match regardless of the outcome of his tribunal hearing.

Melbourne debutant Johnson's dangerous tackle on Brown in Sunday's game at the MCG was graded as careless conduct, medium impact and high contact.
