Archaeologists Uncover Mysterious Tunnel Beneath Ancient Temple In Egypt

Archaeologists discover 'miracle' in ancient Egyptian tomb

Archaeologists have made a remarkable discovery underneath a temple in the ancient city of Taposiris Magna. A vast tunnel, described as a 'geometric miracle,' was unearthed 13 meters below the ground during an excavation led by a team from the University of Santo Domingo. The tunnel, measuring 2 meters in height and stretching an impressive 1,305 meters through sandstone, has left experts in awe.

Similar in design to the Tunnel of Eupalinos on the Greek island of Samos, the purpose of the Taposiris Magna tunnel remains a mystery. Some parts of the tunnel are submerged in water, adding to the intrigue of its function. The lead archaeologist, who has been searching for the lost tomb of Cleopatra VII in Taposiris Magna since 2004, sees the tunnel as a promising clue in their quest.

Taposiris Magna, founded around 280 BCE, is believed to have been dedicated to the gods Osiris and Isis. The team has uncovered figurines of Isis, as well as coins featuring Cleopatra and Alexander the Great, suggesting a strong historical connection to these iconic figures. The potential discovery of long-lost tombs linked to Cleopatra and Mark Antony has sparked excitement among researchers.

Further exploration is planned, including investigations in the nearby Mediterranean Sea. The temple complex has suffered damage from earthquakes over the centuries, with parts of it now submerged underwater. Previous excavations have revealed a network of tunnels extending from Lake Mariout to the Mediterranean, hinting at more hidden treasures waiting to be uncovered.

The recent findings, including a limestone block and pottery fragments, underscore the significance of the ongoing archaeological work at Taposiris Magna. The Minister for Antiquities has expressed the potential importance of discovering the tombs of Cleopatra and Mark Antony, highlighting the significance of the site for historical research and understanding.
