Apply a sheer veil of gold for a winning look

Most people relegate gold eyeshadow to after hours. But I’m not big on rules, so I consider gold a modern neutral that works just as well during the day. There are variations of gold, and how you apply it makes all the difference. Deep, bronzy or rose golds are easier than their yellowy counterpart. But if you still consider gold with trepidation, here’s my advice: use it as a liner or apply a soft sheer veil across the eyelid using a slightly damp brush and a hint of eyeshadow. It will take everything down a notch – except your skin, which will immediately look brighter.

I can’t do without… A comforting and balmy cleanser that’s a great start to the day

I can count on one hand (OK, at a push one and a half) the number of people I trust for beauty advice. One that I do trust is fellow journalist Sali Hughes. I had never used Revolution products, but when Sali joined forces with them, my ears pricked up. I was not disappointed. It’s an impressive range that has been developed with some of the best formulators in the business. It also provided an answer to one of the questions I am regularly asked: ‘Can you recommend a skincare regime that is efficient, effective and won’t break the bank?’ Seeing as the foundation of a good skincare regime – healthy eating and exercise aside – is a decent cleanser, let’s talk about the excellent Clean Sheet Morning Cleanser. A comforting balmy gel that turns into milk on contact with water, it is chockful of hyaluronic acid and glycerin and so, for any skin needing hydration (aka, every skin), it is a dream. Interestingly, it also includes pineapple extracts to exfoliate and brighten the skin, but does so gently, without destabilising or stripping – many exfoliating agents can be brutal. While it says it’s a morning cleanser, I have also found it works well in the evening as part of a double-cleanse routine to remove grime and makeup after a long day. And it does all that without compromising your skin. Or your budget. Win win. Revolution Skincare x Sali Hughes Clean Sheet Morning Cleanser, £10, revolutionbeauty.com
