An application has been submitted for a number of new retail units in Ravenscraig.
The proposal, for applicant O'Brian Properties Ltd. and agent Scott Graham, is for a commercial parade with eight units, drive-thru and electric vehicle charging hub on a site to the south of the Marston’s Inn development (Ravens Cliff) at the junction of New Craig Road and Prospecthill Road.
To the north of the site, the proposed Ravenscraig Retail Hub would also consist of 29 double EV charging parking spaces designed to incorporate the range of size of new electric cars.
In its design statement, planners state that the proposed retail parade looks to use form and mass in order to create an iconic built feature along New Craig Road, being reciprocal to the completed Ravenscraig Regional Sports Centre.
The development looks to provide interest and character through the mixed use of modern and traditional materials to create a building form that is noticeable and iconic.
In its conclusion, the design statement said: “The proposals for Ravenscraig Retail Hub are in line with the Local Development Plan and the Ravenscraig Masterplan.
“The land is allocated for suitable employment use and there is already an existing and capable transport network leading to the site.
“As identified within the Ravenscraig Masterplan approved in 2005 and subsequent review in 2017, there is a requirement to provide local nodes, services, employment and facilities for the estimated 3500 new homes that are envisioned within the masterplan.
“The proposal delivers in part the floor area required to make Ravenscraig a successful and balanced Ward within its own right but also alleviate the requirement for further services to adjoining wards.
“Through the provision of an EV charging hub and proposed energy efficient building shells, the proposal will contribute to ensuring Ravenscraig is a low carbon place for a future low carbon economy and move towards zero emissions.
“The design of the retail parade will provide a striking architectural form visible from the busy New Craig Road, ensuring a strong and iconic centre which adds to the architectural interest already created by the Ravenscraig Regional Sport’s Facility.
“The proposed materials are to be high quality and in-keeping with a building of importance and value to the local area.
“In conclusion and based on the information we have provided, we would respectfully request that you recommend our application for approval.”
Commenting on the potential plan Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig Kenneth Duffy said: " The progress being made at Ravenscraig shows continued confidence in investing in North Lanarkshire, and the wealth of opportunities available at Ravenscraig.
"More shops and amenities are what people in the area have been crying out for."
